Need help studying? Here are some study tips for students.

  1. In order to get the most out of studying, you should create a productive environment. Find and dedicate an area as your workspace. Although many have found a desk to be most helpful, it is not your only option. If a desk isn’t your style, perhaps you would mind more comfort by the kitchen table or even the couch. I wouldn’t suggest your bed as you may subconsciously be telling yourself that it is time to rest.

  2. Great, you have found the ideal space to work – now you need to prepare a study time. This schedule should allow you enough time to thoroughly consult your work without needing to cram your work last minute. You should also make sure to include breaks so as not to overwork yourself. Find the time increments that work for you. Keep to your own pace. (e.g. 50 minutes of studying and 10 minutes for a break) The study material and its intricacy should be kept in mind when making your schedule. It is important to formally set out these days by marking them in your calendar. Better yet, create a schedule that is specifically intended for your study cycle.

  3. Time to create an ideal atmosphere. Put your phone on silent mode to avoid distractions. Now is not the time to start streaming your favorite series – you may tell yourself that you will be able to multitask but let's be honest, you end up far too invested in the show to concentrate on your studies. Instead, put on some quieter, calming tunes. You could of course play background noise instead, and find a few hours of nature sounds on YouTube. If you’re anything like me, you may want to snack. See my previous post for some snack ideas.

  4. Okay, you have a study schedule, the perfect spot, and the ideal setting. Now, how do you begin your studying?

  5. There are a variety of study methods that could work for you. Below I will share a method that I have found to work for me as well as methods that have been proven effective.

How do I study?

  • Note-taking

Throughout lessons, I am taking down notes of the material as they are being taught to me. These are short sentences, summarising the work as we go through it as well as important notes provided by the teacher.

  • Revising

Once we have been taught the material, I go home and make more in-depth notes on the work provided. I consult not only my notes taken during class and the textbook. If provided with additional notes, it would be wise to refer to those – they may provide you with extra insight into the topic.

  • Study Guide

When it comes to prepping this material for tests I set up study guides with the most important work and any key ideas. These are short and concise to recap the overall work.

  • Flashcards

In addition to these study guides, flashcards will be your best friend. Whether it be memorizing terminology or learning those crucial concepts.

Best of luck with your studying journey.
